Kereru (New Zealand Pigeon)

Genus:  Hemiphaga Novaeseelandiae

Size:  51cm

Notes:  A protected bird that can be seen at close quarters in plantation forests if carefully approached. Although it lays only one egg in its nest three to nine metres above the ground, its numbers have increased steadily since protection. It feeds on young leaves and fruit.
