German Wasp

Genus:  Vespula Germanica

Size:  1.3cm

Notes:  Long established throughout New Zealand. Nests are commonly built underground with one or two entrances, but can also be made on tree trunks or in hollow trees. Queens hibernate over winter. Grubs are fed on insects such as spiders and cicadas. In autumn new queens emerge ready for mating and hibernation and by late autumn, nests are empty.
