Genus:  Lophortyx Californica

Size:  25cm
 
Notes:  Seen on the forest floor looking for plants and insects to eat. It usually runs to hide but also flies with its wings held stiffly. It nests on the forest floor in hollows in the ground or in long grass. Males are more distinctively coloured than females and have a plume on the head.
