WOOD IMPORTS
New Zealand imports a small range of wood products, mostly derived from species whose distinct colours, grain or other properties make them of particular value to the furniture industry. The total value of such imports is around NZ$1,300 million and has increased since the government has moved to conserve all state-owned beech and rimu forests in 2002.
Principal sources of supply are Australia (outdoor furniture and railway sleepers), USA, Germany, Canada and Finland for specialised paper products; Australia, Indonesia and other Asian and African countries for special-purpose timbers and veneers.
