WOOD PROCESSORS ASSOCIATION

The Wood Processors Association of New Zealand Incorporated (WPA) provides wood processors with a single, unified voice to advance sector issues and support future growth.

The WPA is representative of the entire processing sector, with the permanent board comprised of directors from equally large and small processors.

Formed in 2005, it is a foundation member of the joint forestry body, Woodco, where it will act as a representative for the wood processing sector.

WPA’s mission is to promote a profitable, competitive, socially responsible and environmentally sustainable wood processing sector that is a world leader in effectively coordinating its resources.

To accomplish this, the WPA aims to:
· Proactively lobby for a more supportive regulatory environment
· Improve the perception of wood-based products and increase domestic demand
· Ensure fair outcomes from Kyoto so that international competitiveness is not compromised and it does not restrict planting or supply of wood
· Provide direction to government on international market access, and act as a catalyst for pan-industry or commercially-driven market cluster developments and distribution initiatives
· Work to reduce energy costs and improve supply
· Promote R&D, pursue supportive tax incentive and funding policies, and streamline the RMA to encourage investment in value-added plant and projects aimed at increasing the sector’s export earnings
· Adopt industry practices that support continuous profitability and push for a more stable currency environment
· Provide direction and feedback to training bodies for future skill needs
· Monitor changes to OSH, ACC and other regulatory bodies
· Provide direction and support for industry research
· Proactively monitor and distribute information relating to environmental legislation
· Promote and monitor industry standards in timber and building
· Maintain the long term sustainability of New Zealand forests
· Communicate to members, government and public as a unified representation of the wood processing sector
