OPERATIONS CYCLE

Click on the forest cycle diagram to see the silvicultural processes needed to produce a mature tree from a seedling.

The term silviculture describes the tending of the forest in order to produce the type of tree the forest grower requires.

Terms Used in Silviculture

Land Preparation – preparation of land before seedlings are planted.

Planting – transplanting of seedlings from the nursery into the forest.

Releasing – clearing of weeds from around the young seedling to avoid competition for water, light and minerals which will slow down its growth.

Pruning – cutting branches from trees while young to produce high quality timber without knots.

Thinning – cutting down some trees in the forest to reduce competition between trees and allow the better formed ones to grow more quickly to maturity.

Felling – cutting down a tree. Clear felling means cutting down all the trees in a forest area.

Wood Extraction – removal of wood from the forest.
